Salt Soap

One by one, of a single pair of two
I bathe them in the salt-soap ocean.
'Neath sweaty, noodle arms I scoop
him up and fling his sobbing carcass with one motion


into the whitest, most unforgiving wave.
When he does not return, I scour the beach for her.
She sees me coming – I am not going to cave.
Not as slippery, she fades into abyss without a stir.


and so I sit with folded knees on the beach
wondering if I'll ever have my own to teach.
